The Engage Families Goal: A Multigenerational Audience
There are many audiences you could design a program for - adults, seniors, children, students, families. No one audience is better or more important than another. The audience(s) you choose to design for will inform much of your program design and facilitation.
In the Engage Families Project of the USS Constitution Museum, we sought to identify characteristics of family programming design and facilitation that result in active intergenerational engagement, enjoyment, and learning in museums and libraries. So what you see in this online toolkit is geared towards that audience goal.
How to Use This Toolkit
This section of the website presents strategies, techniques, considerations, and ideas developed after an extensive iterative process of program design, revision, and facilitation over the course of two years at the USS Constitution Museum and at public libraries throughout Massachusetts.
What You'll See
The pages and ideas are not meant to serve as a checklist, but rather they offer considerations to help in your own program design and facilitation. Each page contains text, videos, and photos that convey ideas, examples, resources for further exploration, and words of wisdom from experts in engagement, learning, museums, and libraries.
At the top of each page you'll find summaries of the "Big Ideas" explored in the rest of the page. If you're revising a program or just want to quickly try out a strategy, the "Quick and Easy To-Dos" offer some possibilities.
Who You'll Meet
This section is written by the Engage Families Team. But throughout you'll hear about best practices from members of our project Steering Committee:
